The insurance company uses that against you.  Go to the emergency room or an urgent care center immediately after the accident and tell them about everything that hurts as a result of the accident.  If your knee hurts a little after the accident but your back is more of a concern and you fail to mention the knee injury, months later when the knee is a bigger problem, the insurer will claim that some other incident must have caused the knee problem since you never reported it at the emergency room visit.
